Sunrise, FL Electrician: Licensed, Local and Bilingual
Watt's Up Electric is based in Sunrise. When you call (954) 868-8341, you're talking to a licensed Florida electrical contractor (license EC13013513) from your own city, not a call center that hands your job to whoever happens to be free. We handle everything from a dead outlet in a Sunrise Lakes condo to a panel change in Welleby to an EV charger in a newer home out west near Sawgrass Mills, and we'll explain the work in English or Spanish, whichever is easier for you.
We prepare electrical drawings in house, and our in-house permit expediting team handles your permit, so your project doesn't wait on paperwork.

Sunrise homes, from east to west
If you've lived here a while, you know Sunrise changes as you drive west on Oakland Park or Sunrise Boulevard. The houses get newer, and the electrical calls change with them.
East Sunrise and the original Sunrise Golf Village. The city started out in 1961 as Sunrise Golf Village, Norman Johnson's development (the one famous for its Upside-Down House). The oldest single-family homes and low-rise condos are on the east side, many from the 1960s and '70s. In these homes we usually find panels sized for a house with window units and no home office, two-prong outlets with no ground, tired breakers, and decades of add-ons from previous owners. None of that means you need to rewire the whole house. It means someone should look at it before you add more load.
Some homes wired in the mid-1960s to early 1970s used aluminum branch-circuit wiring, which needs the right connectors and devices to stay safe. If your home is from that era and you're not sure what's in the walls, it's worth having it checked.
Sunrise Lakes and the 55+ condo communities. Inside a condo unit, the calls we get are breakers that keep tripping, kitchen and bathroom outlets that never got GFCI protection, dim or dated lighting, and small changes that make a home easier to live in, like brighter lighting in hallways and lighted switches. Anything outside your walls, such as the meter room, common areas or parking lot, belongs to the association, so check with your board or manager before work that touches those areas.
Welleby, Springtree and central Sunrise. This part of town is mostly single-family homes from the 1970s and '80s with mature landscaping. A lot of them still have their original panel, or one replaced decades ago, and that panel is now carrying a bigger AC, a remodeled kitchen, maybe a second fridge in the garage, and soon an electric car. That's when a panel evaluation pays for itself.
West of Flamingo Road, out by Sawgrass. The gated, association-run communities near Sawgrass Mills, Amerant Bank Arena and the Sawgrass Expressway were mostly built from the 1990s on. The wiring is usually in better shape, so the calls are about adding things: EV chargers, generators, recessed and landscape lighting, smart-home controls, motorized shades and audio/video. If it changes the outside of the house, your HOA will probably want to approve it first.
We also work with Sunrise businesses, from offices off the Sawgrass Expressway to shops and restaurants along Commercial Boulevard, University Drive, Pine Island Road, Nob Hill Road and Hiatus Road.

Problems we see a lot in Sunrise
Lights that flicker when the AC kicks on. A slight dip when a big compressor starts can be normal. Lights that dim hard, flicker for a long time, or flicker all over the house are worth a look, because the cause can be a loose connection in the panel or at the service. We wrote more about it here: Why do my lights flicker when the AC kicks on?
A breaker that keeps tripping. Sometimes it's simply too much on one circuit. Sometimes it's a fault in the wiring or a device. Either way, don't swap in a bigger breaker or hold it on. The breaker is doing its job.
Warm, buzzing or discolored outlets and switches. Stop using it and give us a call. Heat at a device usually means a loose or failing connection.
Storm surges. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are a regular thing in western Broward, and lightning and utility switching can send surges into your home. A surge protector at the panel is a small job compared with replacing an AC board or a refrigerator.
Older panels and insurance. If you're buying an older Sunrise home or shopping for homeowners insurance, the insurer will often ask for a 4-point inspection that includes the electrical system, and aging panels can get flagged. We'll look at yours and tell you plainly whether it needs a repair, a replacement, or nothing at all.
Warning signs you shouldn't ignore
Call us right away if you notice:
- A burning or hot-plastic smell from an outlet, switch or the panel
- An outlet or switch plate that's warm, buzzing or discolored
- A breaker that trips again the moment you reset it
- Lights that dim hard or flicker in several rooms at once
- Part of the house losing power while the rest stays on
Turn off that circuit if you can do it safely and call (954) 868-8341. If there's smoke or fire, call 911 first.
Permits and inspections in Sunrise
Panel changes, service upgrades, generators, new circuits and most EV charger installs need an electrical permit. In Sunrise, permits go through the City's Community Development Department and its Building Division, applications are filed through the city's online portal, and every permitted job ends with a city inspection. Before any work starts, we'll tell you whether your project needs a permit and what the inspection involves. Anything on the utility side, like the meter or the service line coming in from the street, also has to be coordinated with FPL.
One local detail: Sunrise runs its own natural gas utility, the Sunrise Gas System, which the city says is the only city-owned gas utility in South Florida. If you're thinking about a natural gas standby generator, the gas line is handled by a licensed gas contractor. The electrical side, meaning the transfer switch, the wiring and the panel connections, is ours.
For condo boards and property managers: under Broward County's Building Safety Inspection Program, many buildings 25 years or older need structural and electrical safety inspections, and again every 10 years after that. One- and two-family homes and buildings under 3,500 square feet are exempt. The inspection itself has to be done by a Florida-licensed engineer or architect. If the electrical report comes back "Repairs Required," the repairs are made under permit and the engineer submits a new report. Making those repairs is the part a licensed electrical contractor like us can do.

Getting ready for storm season in Sunrise
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Before it starts, make a list of what you need to keep running (refrigerator, a room of AC, medical equipment), because that list is how a generator and transfer switch get sized. Never plug a portable generator into a wall outlet: it can send power back onto the utility lines and endanger line crews. Use a properly installed transfer switch instead. After a storm, stay away from downed lines and report them to FPL, and have any outlet, panel or outdoor equipment that got wet checked before you turn it back on. More in our hurricane season tips.
Sunrise electrician FAQ
Are you actually based in Sunrise?
Yes. Watt's Up Electric is based in Sunrise, FL. We focus on Sunrise and nearby Broward cities, including Plantation, Weston and Davie.
Do I need a permit to replace my electrical panel in Sunrise?
Yes. A panel change or service upgrade needs an electrical permit and a city inspection in Sunrise. We'll tell you up front what your project requires.
Can you work inside my Sunrise Lakes condo?
Yes. We do repairs, outlet and GFCI upgrades, and lighting work inside condo units. For anything that touches common areas, the meter room or the outside of the building, check with your association first.
Can you install an EV charger at my Sunrise home?
Yes. We install Level 2 chargers and Tesla Wall Connectors. First we check whether your panel has room for the new load, so the charger runs safely every night. In a condo or HOA community, ask your association what approval it needs before you schedule.
Do you handle electrical emergencies at night or on weekends?
Yes. We offer 24/7 emergency electrical service. Call (954) 868-8341. If there's fire, smoke or someone has been shocked, call 911 first.

Could my Sunrise home have aluminum wiring?
Homes wired in the mid-1960s to early 1970s are the ones to check. Sometimes "AL" or "ALUMINUM" is printed on the cable jacket at the panel or in the attic. If you're not sure, we can check it for you.
Why do my breakers keep tripping?
Usually it's too much load on one circuit, a worn-out breaker, or a fault in the wiring or a device. We test the circuit to find which one it is, rather than just resetting it.
Our condo building's electrical safety report says "Repairs Required." Can you help?
Yes. The inspection itself has to be done by a Florida-licensed engineer or architect, but the repairs are made by a licensed electrical contractor under permit. Send us the report, and we'll go over the electrical items with your board or manager.
