Motorized Shades in Weston, FL: What to Know Before You Buy
If you live in Weston, you already know the afternoon sun. It pours through those big sliders and picture windows, heats up the family room, fades the couch and puts a glare on the TV right when the game starts. Motorized shades fix that without you walking from window to window pulling cords, and they're one of the most-loved upgrades in a smart home.
But shades are also one of the easiest things to get wrong. Pick the wrong power option, skip the wiring before the drywall goes up, or buy a system that won't talk to your lighting, and you end up with shades you don't really use. Here's the practical guide we'd give a friend in Weston, Sunrise, Plantation or Davie before they spend a dollar.
Why motorized shades make so much sense in South Florida
Motorized shades aren't just a luxury gadget. In a Broward home they solve real, everyday problems:
Heat and glare. Lowering shades on the sunny side of the house during the hottest part of the day keeps rooms more comfortable and cuts glare on screens.
Fading. Sun-facing rooms are hard on floors, art and furniture. Shades that lower on a schedule protect them even when nobody's home.
Hard-to-reach windows. Two-story great rooms, clerestory windows and tall sliders are a pain to cover by hand. A motor does the reaching for you.
Privacy on a schedule. Shades can close at sunset automatically, so you're not lit up like a fishbowl at night.
Child safety. Motorized shades have no dangling operating cords. That matters: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says cordless window coverings are the only option that eliminates the strangulation hazard to young children (CPSC: Window Covering Cords). Since May 30, 2023, federal rules also require operating cords on custom window coverings to meet the same cord-safety requirements as stock ones (16 CFR Part 1260).
Wired vs. battery-powered shades: the big decision
This is the question we get most, and it shapes everything else.
Hardwired (low-voltage) shades
Hardwired shades get their power through a cable run to each window. Lutron's higher-end wired systems are built for this, and they're what we usually recommend for new construction and major remodels.
Why people choose them: no batteries to ever change, very quiet operation, and they're ideal for large or heavy shades and for whole-house systems where dozens of shades move together.
The catch: the wire has to get to every window. That's easy with open walls and much harder after the drywall and paint are done.
Battery-powered shades
Lutron also makes battery-powered shades (and some plug-in options) that don't need new wiring at each window. They're a great fit for existing homes where you don't want to open walls.
Why people choose them: a much simpler install in a finished home, and they still work with Lutron's app, remotes and scenes.
The catch: batteries need changing from time to time, and they're not the right pick for every very large or very heavy shade.
Our honest take
If you're building, renovating or opening walls anyway, pre-wire for shades even if you don't buy them today. A cable run behind the drywall now costs far less than fishing wire later. If your Weston home is finished and you love it as it is, battery-powered shades are a perfectly good choice, and we'll tell you which windows they suit.
Plan the wiring before the walls close
Shades are a low-voltage job at heart, and the planning is where a licensed electrical contractor earns their keep. Before any walls close, we look at:
Where each shade's cable lands. It has to come out exactly where the shade bracket mounts, usually at the top corner of the window opening. Off by a few inches and you're patching drywall.
Where the power and control equipment lives. Whole-house shade systems usually run back to a central location like a closet or utility room, along with your lighting and network gear. See our low voltage services for how we plan these runs.
Keypad locations. Most people want a keypad by the door to each main room and one by the bed, so think about where your hand naturally goes.
Window pockets and valances. If you want the shade to disappear into a recessed pocket in the ceiling, that has to be framed early.
Because we do our own electrical drawings in-house and have an in-house permit expediting team, the shade wiring gets drawn and planned with the rest of your electrical work instead of tacked on at the end. When the job needs a permit, our team handles that paperwork too.
How shades fit into your lighting and smart home
The magic happens when shades stop being their own thing and become part of the house.
With Lutron lighting. Lutron shades and Lutron lighting controls are designed to work together, so one button can set the lights and the shades at the same time. "Movie" dims the lights and closes the shades. "Good morning" opens the bedroom shades and brings the lights up slowly. Learn more on our Lutron lighting and shades page.
With Control4. If you have or want a Control4 system, shades can be part of the same scenes, schedules and touchscreens as your audio, video, security and climate. See our Control4 smart home page.
With schedules and the sun. Shades can follow a time-of-day schedule, so the west-facing family room closes in the afternoon and opens again in the evening without anyone touching anything.
Not sure which ecosystem fits you? Our earlier post, Lutron vs. Control4 vs. Hue for South Florida homes, walks through the differences.
Sebastian, our owner, has personal training in both Control4 and Lutron and more than 10 years of experience in home automation, so the person designing your system has actually done this many times before.
Choosing fabric: the part people rush
The motor gets all the attention, but fabric decides how the room feels. A few practical tips:
Light filtering vs. room darkening. Light-filtering fabric softens glare while keeping the room bright. Room-darkening (blackout) fabric is for bedrooms and media rooms. Many homes use both, sometimes on the same window with a dual-shade bracket.
Openness. Sheer screen fabrics let you see outside while cutting glare, which is great for that pool or lake view. More open fabric means more view and less glare control; tighter fabric means the opposite.
Color. Darker screen fabrics usually make the outside view clearer; lighter fabrics bounce more light back into the room. Look at samples in your own window in the afternoon before you decide.
Order a sample. Seriously. Daylight in a Weston living room looks nothing like a showroom.
A few questions to ask any installer
Whoever you hire, ask:
Are you a licensed electrical contractor? Wired shades involve low-voltage cabling and often new power at a central location. We're licensed (EC13013513) and insured.
Will you pre-wire if I'm not buying shades yet? A good installer should encourage it during construction.
How will the shades tie into my lighting or smart home? If the answer is "use a separate app," keep asking.
Who programs the scenes and schedules? Programming is what makes shades feel smart. Make sure it's part of the job.
What happens if something needs adjusting later? Ask how service and warranty questions are handled.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add motorized shades to my existing Weston home without opening walls?
Often, yes. Battery-powered and plug-in shade options don't need a new cable to every window. We'll look at your windows and tell you which ones suit battery shades and where hardwiring is worth it.
Should I pre-wire for shades during a remodel even if I'm not buying them yet?
We recommend it. Running cable while walls are open is far easier than fishing wire later, and it keeps your options open for hardwired shades down the road.
Do motorized shades work with Control4 and Lutron lighting?
Yes. Lutron shades are designed to work with Lutron lighting controls, and they can also be part of a Control4 system, so lights and shades move together in one scene.
Are motorized shades safer for kids than corded blinds?
Motorized shades have no dangling operating cords. The CPSC says cordless window coverings are the only option that eliminates the cord strangulation hazard for young children (CPSC).
Do you install motorized shades outside Weston?
Yes. We're based in Sunrise and work across Broward, including Sunrise, Plantation, Weston and Davie.
